Mp3 Repair For Mac
Apologies if this is in the wrong area, but the 'Tips & Tricks' area is closed. For a couple of years I left corrupt mp3's in my library if I couldn't HEAR a problem with them. They didn't seem to cause any problems so I left them alone. Got my first 'kernel panic' (during a gig of course) a few months back, read up on it and found I needed to remove them all. I did so and have had no problems since.
Visual MP3 is a Windows program that performs tasks such as organization of MP3 files, MP3 playback, lyric-pal display, rip CDs, ID3 tag batch edit and MP3 files batch rename. It is presented in an excellent user-friendly environment, since it is simple and easy to use. The Mac OS X handyman is called MP3 Scan+Repair. Barely 1MB, MP3 Scan+Repair is a small, but resourceful application, that’s just as easy (if not easier) to use as MP3val. Files can be added from within the application, or by dragging it onto the application window or dock item.

There were about 250 corrupt files (out of 13,000). A lot of them were not needed, but a few I played regularly. I have just discovered a free program that repairs (most) of them. I would say 9 out of 10 have been fixed. Added them back to the library, rebuilt the track overview & the corrupt iTunes icon is gone. I also use iTunes to organize my library FWIW. Anyways, so far so good!

Your mileage may vary. There is also a Windows version I believe called MP3 Validator, but you would have to read up on that if it interests you.
Sure beats converting a 10MB file to a 100MB WAV to fix it. If it keeps up the good work I will definitely send them a few $ to support it.
Program & info can be found here. Quote: All my MP3's are on an external drive.
Is there an easy way to find the corrupted files or do you have to just go through all of them individually? Adobe reader for mac. If any of you files are corrupted a little broken CD icon will appears on the left of the track in your library in Serato. Serato detects all of the corrupt files.
Also for the people that don't have many corrupted files you can use a sound edit program to remove a little bit of the track at the end or the beginning where there is usually no audio, and re add it to Serato and 8 times of 10 the corrupt logo will disappear. That's the method I use. Pretty sure the link I posted is for the Mac GUI version of mp3Val. If it is the same thing, it works! As far as 'trimming' an mp3 goes to get rid of garbage at the beginning or end of a track, most sound editors will decompress to WAV or AIFF first. Then you are left with a 'fixed' but very large file or you have to re-encode to mp3 and lose audio quality. This program (and another very useful program called MP3 Trimmer) can achieve that without decompressing the file first.
Also, this program takes all of half a second to fix a file. Manually fixing files (even with MP3 Trimmer) took me considerably longer. As far as finding and isolating the corrupt tracks goes, just click on the icon column in Serato and it will sort them together. If you have never done this, there may be a lot of them. (Important to note: only files that have had overviews built and or played in Serato will show as corrupt.
If you haven't built overviews for every track there may be, and probably are, corrupt files in there that don't show up). You can then select all the corrupt tracks and drag them to a new folder anywhere you like on the drive.

I believe this makes copies of the tracks in a new location, it doesn't 'move' them. As I use iTunes, I found it more effective to first clean out my trash then I manually deleted each corrupt track I found from iTunes. Without 'emptying' the trash, I moved all the tracks from the trash to a new folder. That way I was sure there were no duplicate files anywhere on my drive. Took a while and there is probably a better/faster way, but that's what worked.
Quote: Here's a Validator for PC users: thanks! I recently force-reanalyzed all my files and it found like 10 corrupt ones. They played fine, but itch found them to be damaged. FYI: you can highlight multiple files and drag them from itch (i assume SSL as well) to mp3val's frontend directly. You don't have to locate them in explorer. Mp3val said it fixed all of them, but itch reported 1 as still damaged.
Meh, it was a duplicate anyway, i just deleted it. I recommend this program for those that have a damaged file they want to keep on their hand. It even saved my cue points. (havn't tested it on wl.mp3 files). Quote: I used mp3Val for this, works on windows, OS X and Linux. It's a command line tool, but you can just Drag and drop files to the application.
